“I love what I weigh!” –Said NO ONE. 


If there was ever one culprit that could throw you for a loop and ruin your day 99% of the time, it’s the scale. What other object can cause you to feel bad about yourself for not eating “healthy enough” and then lead you buy a dozen donuts to feel better? Who else has been on the eat strict, scale said failure, eat whatever, start again on Monday cycle?

We give this little square the power to change how we feel about ourselves. The scale becomes a joy thief, a happiness sucker.  I LOVE nothing more than sabotaging the scale. I don’t own one. I don’t like getting on one. And I LOVE to collect scales from others so they too can feel scale freedom. 

If you must use a scale, please consider the 7 reasons below to help keep the number in perspective:

  1. Your body is dynamic. Every day it exchanges stored energy for new energy. It deposits body fat and breaks down body fat. It is a number that changes constantly, all day, everyday.  Check out this graph to see just how dynamic weight can be. Can you imagine if the emotional roller coaster I would have ridden if I reacted to each of these numbers?
  2. When its cloudy outside, the barometric pressure changes the way your body holds water. You weigh more on cloudy days. 
  3. When you fly on an airplane the cabin pressure effects your body. You might experience edema or bloating and there is a strong likelihood that you will weigh more a few days after stepping off a plane. 
  4. When you don’t eat carbohydrates, your body depletes your stored carbohydrate (glycogen) to access energy. For every one part glycogen your body breaks down, you lose 3 parts water. When you don’t eat carbs the quick weight drop isn’t weight loss, its water loss. 
  5. When you exercise, your muscles become inflamed and increase water storage. It is very likely that you will weigh more after exercising. If you do weigh less after a workout, you are dehydrated and need 2-3 cups of water per pound lost. 
  6. It is possible to gain weight while decreasing a pant size. 
  7. The scale doesn’t know how to measure f***ing sexy. 

What would it be like to put your energy into these tracking tools instead?

  • Rank your energy level on a scale of 1-10
  • Notice if your clothes fit differently
  • Observe self confidence changes
  • Track the number of fruits and veggies you eat in a day
  • Count success in a week based on connections, acts of service, kindness extended toward others

If you are a person that perseverates on that number, THROW OUT YOUR SCALE. Or if you must use it please use it as directed in the label warning below. Let’s put energy into something that actually makes you feel good— increases self confidence AND motivation… and fuels the healthy decision train we are trying to ride in the first place!
